Abolition Movement


Abolitionist: Person who supported the end of slavery.

Frederick Douglass was an abolitionist.
John Brown was an abolitionist.

Slavery existed in the United States during "Growth and Change." The United States was split about the right of citizens to own slaves. Abolitionists worked to end slavery in the United States.
While the Civil War did not begin as a war to abolish slavery, debates about slavery deeply divided our nation. The South favored the expansion of slavery into the new territories. The North opposed allowing slavery in the new territories.

Frederick Douglass

Frederick Douglass (1817-1895) was a former slave who escaped to the North and became a famous abolitionist orator and writer. William Lloyd Garrison published an abolitionist newspaper, The Liberator. The Underground Railroad was a system of escape routes leading slaves to freedom. Harriet Tubman led over 300 slaves to freedom on the Underground Railroad
